How to Repair a Transponder Car Key

Transponder keys are car keys with additional security features that help to prevent auto theft. The key is equipped with a radio frequency, enabling it to only work with the car with the matching frequency. Transponder keys are otherwise just like keyless entry keys, with a fob that allows you to control your door locks and trunk release with the push of a button from yards away. If your transponder key breaks, you can attempt to fix it yourself before resorting to making an appointment with an automobile service department.
Step 1
Replace the battery in your transponder key remote. You can purchase a new battery at any vehicle dealership or auto parts store. All you need to know is the year, make and model of your vehicle and a professional will locate a new battery for you.
Step 2
Pop open the transponder key remote with a sharp tool, such as a screwdriver or a butter knife. Replace the battery, pop the remote pieces back together and test your new battery.
Step 3
Reprogram your key by rapidly turning your car on and off eight times in less than 10 seconds. This method reprograms the radio frequency between your car and the key in the event that your transponder key isn't working due to a technical glitch in your car.
Step 4
Recharge your transponder key fob by going for a drive. All key fobs are recharged when driving.
