How to Remove the Front Wheel Bearings on a Chevy Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado replaced the S-10 in 2005 as Chevy's new small truck product. With it came a lot of changes in the design, including the front suspension and wheel bearings. Traditionally, the S-10 used a multiple bearing system that was difficult to grease and tough to maintain. Now, the Colorado uses a sealed bearing system that comes off in one piece and rarely needs adjustment.


Lift up the front of the vehicle using the jack and secure it on jack stands. Make sure the vehicle is completely secure on the jack stands before you crawl underneath it. Remove the front wheels using the tire iron and place them to the side, out of the workspace.


Unclip the speed sensor line from the harness. This is the only electrical connection that runs from the hub to the frame, so disconnect the harness and unbolt the bracket from the upper control arm using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Use the paint marker to draw a line on the steering knuckle to mark the location of the speed sensor for reinstallation.


Unbolt the brake caliper from the front rotors using a 3/8-inch ratchet and socket, then hang the caliper from the metal hook and hook the other end onto a hole in the frame.


Unbolt the wheel hub mounting bolts from the rear of the steering knuckle using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Pull the rotor and wheel bearing assembly off as one unit and place it on the ground. Then unbolt the hub from the rotor using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
