How to Remove the Transmission in a Chevy Malibu
by Cameron EaseyReplacing the transmission on your Chevrolet Malibu is a major repair which requires replacing the old part with a new one. However, you can obtain this part by taking the transmission out of an old Malibu from a junk yard. This is a less expensive alternative to buying a new transmission for your vehicle. To do this you need to first find a Malibu with a transmission that is in good working order.
Step 1
Pull the hood release lever inside the Malibu and set the hood support bar. Disconnect the battery cables from the terminals on the battery with the wrench.
Step 2
Place the car jack under the frame behind the left front or right front tires. Raise the corner of the car off the ground. Set a jack stand under the frame and lower the car jack. Repeat this step on the other side to place the car on the jack stands.
Step 3
Connect the chains from the engine hoist to the engine. This will help to support the engine when it is time to take off the transmission.
Step 4
Remove the bolts from each of the motor mounts with the socket wrench. This will prevent damage to the engine when removing the transmission.
Step 5
Loosen the lug nuts on the two front wheels with the air gun and remove the lug nuts from the studs. Take off the wheels and set them aside. Disconnect the splash shield on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Step 6
Disconnect the shift cable and all of the electrical connections from the transmission. This includes the electrical connector that is on the speed sensor. Take off the air intake duct.
Step 7
Place a tray or bucket under the transmission and drain the power steering fluid. Remove the bolts that are used to secure the power steering system.
Step 8
Remove the bolts that are on the sides and front of the transmission drain pan with the socket wrench. Loosen the bolts at the rear, but do not yet take them out.
Step 9
Pry the transmission pan away from the transmission with the flat head screwdriver. The transmission fluid will begin to drain into the bucket. Tighten the side and front bolts to secure the transmission pan back on the transmission.
Step 10
Disconnect the suspension support on the left and right side of the vehicle with the socket wrench. These are located on the sides of the transmission.
Step 11
Position the car jack under the transmission and loosen the bolts from the transmission mount. Remove the bolts and begin lowering the transmission out of the vehicle.
