How to Remove the Ignition Cylinder on a 1998 Ford Contour
by Alibaster SmithThe ignition cylinder in your 1998 Ford Contour unlocks the ignition and allows you to start the vehicle's engine. The '98 used a transponder inside the key as part of an anti-theft deterrent. However, when the ignition module fails, you may be able to turn the key, but your engine will not start. Replacement ignition cylinders are available only from Ford. You'll also need a new key that corresponds to the new ignition cylinder.
Step 1
Turn the ignition key to the "II" position.
Step 2
Slide a 1/8-inch pin punch into the access hole underneath the ignition cylinder.
Step 3
Slide the pin all the way into the hole while simultaneously pulling the ignition cylinder out of the Contour's steering column.
