The Chevrolet 3500 truck is a powerful vehicle known for its heavy towing capability, so having properly working brakes is essential for its safe operation. The front rotors of this four-wheel drive truck need to be kept in proper working order to allow for smooth stops when the brake calipers press against them. If the rotors on your 3500 are in poor condition, then the truck will be difficult to stop. To replace the front rotors, you will need to remove the front wheels and calipers.

Step 1

Park your Chevy 3500 truck on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake to prevent the truck from moving as it is raised.

Step 2

Use a tire tool to loosen the lug nuts on both front tires.

Step 3

Place a jack under the front of the vehicle and raise it off the ground. Place jack stands under the cross-member. Once the truck has been raised and is stable, lower it squarely onto the jack stands.

Step 4

Remove the lug nuts, then pull off the wheels and set them aside.

Step 5

Locate and remove the two screws directly behind the brake caliper with a socket wrench and a T-55 attachment. Remove the caliper from the front rotor. Do not damage the caliper by allowing it to hang off the control arm by the brake line. Instead, attach the caliper to the frame of the vehicle with either a wire or bungee cord to prevent damage.

Step 6

Remove the brake pads from the front rotor by pulling them off of their holders attached to the rotor. Then remove the pad holders by loosening each of them with the socket wrench, enabling you to pull them off of the rotor.

Step 7

Slide the rotor off of the bearing assembly and spindle. You should be able to run your fingernail across the surface of the spindle without any resistance. If this is not the case, you will need to replace the spindle.
