How to Remove a 2008 Duramax Exhaust Filter
by Russell WoodThe 2008 Chevrolet Silverado equipped with the Duramax diesel engine has an inline filter in the exhaust called the diesel particulate filter (DPE). This filter was installed to reduce emissions, but some owners want to remove the filter so that they can gain extra mileage or performance out of the engine. The process of removing the filter is not technically difficult, but it takes some time to do properly and it involves some heavy lifting.
Step 1
Put the truck on jack stands with the jack, positioned high enough that you can move freely under the vehicle.
Step 2
Locate the exhaust filter, which is the circular, inline canister on the exhaust. It is located under the middle of the cab. Unbolt the rear section of the exhaust from the exhaust filter using an open-end wrench and the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
Step 3
Remove the exhaust hanger holding the exhaust filter to the chassis with your hands. Unbolt the forward section of the exhaust from the exhaust filter using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench.
Step 4
Lower the exhaust filter out of the exhaust system and roll it out from under the Chevrolet truck.
