What Is the Purpose of a Fan Shroud?

A fan shroud covers the area around the cooling fan in a car. The shroud is important in the safe operation of your vehicle. Shrouds also reduce fan noise.
Cooling Functions
The fan shroud channels the flow of air toward the radiator to help keep the coolant cool. Operating a vehicle with a broken or damaged shroud can lead to overheating of the engine.
Safety Functions
The shroud also protects the fan blade from debris entering and damaging the fan. It contributes to personal safety by preventing injury from accidental body contact with the fan.
Noise Reduction
Noise is reduced with a fan shroud. The shroud reduces turbulence, allowing for smoother flow of air through the cooling system thereby reducing noise.
