How to Make a Homemade Oil Filter Wrench

by Bob White

Changing the oil in your car regularly will increase its lifespan. One way to save money on this project is to do the job yourself. The process is very simple and can be done in your driveway with some common tools. The only specialized tool you require is an oil filter wrench. This is used to loosen the oil filter from its housing. Making your own oil filter wrench is easy with an old leather belt.

Clean the dirt and oil from the filter housing with a spray degreaser and a rag.

Hold the belt latch on the filter and wrap the leather strap around the filter going right to left.

Thread the leather strap through the latch and tighten around the oil filter.

Pull the strap to remove the filter. Remember the old saying "Lefty loosy, righty tighty."
