A well-known manufacturer of both on- and off-road motorcycles, Kawasaki Motor Corporation, has also been manufacturing ATVs for since 1981. The Bayou make has remained popular through the years, with a 250 cc version available for 2011. The 400 cc Bayou was manufactured until 1999. In its final year, it featured four-wheel drive and other appealing specs.
The 1999 Bayou 400 comes equipped with a single-cylinder, four-stroke engine with a single overhead camshaft configuration. It has a displacement of 391 cc -- 23.9 cubic inches -- a bore and stroke of 3.19 by 2.99 inches and a compression ratio of 9.0 to 1.0. Additionally, the engine can perform at a net torque of 23.9 foot-pounds at 5,000 revolutions per minute.
Systems and Transmission
The '99 Bayou 400 comes with an electric starter, a liquid-cooling system and a digital capacitive discharge ignition. Other systems include a Keihin CVK32 carburetor and a wet sump lubricator. The quad has an automatic, centrifugal primary clutch and a wet, multi-disc secondary system. It also has a shaft driving system with four-wheel drive and a constant-mesh transmission with five speeds plus reverse.
Chassis and Suspension
Built on a tubular, double-cradle frame, the 1999 Bayou 400 features a caster angle of 2.5 degrees and a trail of 0.47 inches. The quad comes equipped with a dual A-arm suspension up front with 5.1 inches of travel. In back, a quad-link suspension system protects rider and ATV, also with 5.1 inches of travel.
Brakes and Tires
The '99 Bayou 400 also features dual hydraulic disc brakes in the front and single drum brakes in the rear. The quad takes tubeless tires in both front and back, size AT24 x 8-11 and AT24 x 10-11, respectively.
Weighing 595 lbs. without fuel, the Kawasaki Bayou 400 measures 79.53 inches in length, 44.49 in width, and 43.31 in height. It has a wheelbase of 47.24 inches, a front track of 33.5 and a rear track of 33.9. A large ground clearance of 7.28 inches allows for added maneuverability on uneven trails. Additionally, the quad's fuel tank can hold up to 3.2 gallons. Meant for utility as well as recreation, the 1999 Bayou 400 has a front carrying rack capacity of 88 lbs., a rear capacity of 154, and can tow as much as 1,102 lbs.
