How to Install a Tow Bar on a Ford Ranger

by Richard Daub

A tow bar is a device that is attached to the front of a vehicle for the purpose of being towed by a larger vehicle such as an RV. The tow bar is triangular and is affixed to the frame on a Ford Ranger; it attaches to the ball mount of a trailer hitch on the towing vehicle. Tow bars that are compatible with the Ford Ranger include models manufactured by Democo, Blue Ox and Roadmaster.

1

Park the Ranger on a flat surface, and apply the parking brake.

2

Measure the size of the frame at the front of the Ranger, using a tape measure or other measurement instrument, as well as the width of the tow bar.

3

Use a pencil to mark the vehicle frame where the bolt holes will be drilled. These marks should be centered on the frame based on the widths of the frame and tow bar.

4

Clamp the tow bar to the vehicle frame and align the bar to your drill hole markings.

5

Drill the holes in the frame, using the position of the tow bar as a template.

6

Insert the mounting bolts and tighten them with a wrench.

7

Attach the safety cable and safety chains; these should be included with the tow bar.

Tip

  • check While shopping for a tow bar, check the product specifications to make sure that the model you select has the capacity to tow the weight of your Ranger. During installation, it is helpful to park the towing vehicle a few feet in front of the Ranger. This will help in making any necessary adjustments to the tow bar you are installing.
