How to Reset the Security System on Vehiclesby Contributing Writer
The security System on a Vehicles uses a proximity sensor and a Vehicles immobilizer switch to help prevent unauthorized entry and theft of the car. When the alarm is tripped, the headlights will flash and the horn will sound. If the alarm has been tripped in error, you will need to reset the security system to silence the alarm. Depending on the year of the Vehicles the alarm will stop and reset automatically on its own after one to three minutes.

Insert the ignition key into the driver side door lock.
Turn the key counterclockwise to unlock the door.
Turn the key clockwise to initiate the alarm activation sequence.
Turn the key counterclockwise. The alarm will stop and reset itself.
Turn the key to the "On" position in the Silverado without turning over. Let the vehicle sit for 10 minutes, leaving the key in the "On" position. Some Passlock systems will relearn the codes after this amount of time.
Try to start the vehicle. If it starts, you have solved the issue. If it does not, you will need to either take the vehicle in or install a bypass module to circumvent the security system altogether.
Install the bypass module. Bypass modules are commonly used for installing remote starters on vehicles. The Silverado uses Passlock 2 bypass modules. There are two separate Passlock 2 systems used. To determine which kind you have remove the lower dash using a screwdriver. In the harness going to the steering column, you are looking for 3 thin wires which are white, yellow, and orange/black. Cut the yellow wire (positive) and strip back some of the orange/black wire (ground). Connect the potentiometer with the vehicle in either drive or reverse. Hold the key in the start position and read the measurement. Crank the starter. If the reading changes you will use a separate method of connecting the bypass module.
Follow the steps in the bypass module kit to complete installation once you have determined which method is required. (See Resources.) Make sure you are using same sized resistors.

Open the driver's door.
Press the power door-lock switch to lock all the doors, with the driver's door still open. The "SECURITY" light will come on.
Close the driver's door. The "SECURITY" light will go off after about 30 seconds. The system has been reset.
Insert the key into the ignition.
Rotate the key to the "On" position. Leave the key in that position for 10 minutes.
Rotate the key to the "Off" position when the security warning light on the instrument panel disappears. This usually takes 10 to 12 minutes with key in the "On" position.
Start the car as normal.
Insert your key into the driver side door or unlock the doors with your keyless entry remote. This will disarm the security system and allow you to open the door. The light on the radio display will go off -- letting you know that the system is no longer armed.
To reset the security system, insert the key into the ignition. Open the trunk or any door of the Impala. Switch the lock to the "lock" position. Remove the key from the ignition. The light on the radio display will flash quickly; this signals that the system is resetting.
Close the door or trunk. The light on the radio display will flash slowly. The system is now reset and ready for use.
Insert the key into the ignition switch.
Turn the ignition switch to "OFF." Remove the key from the ignition.
Insert the key into a door or the trunk.
Turn the key counterclockwise. The security system resets as the door or trunk is unlocked with the key.
Shift the Lumina's transmission into park and turn off the engine. Set the parking brake and turn the ignition back to the "ON" position, but do not re-start the engine.
Connect the scan tool's communication cable to the Lumina's diagnostic data port. This port is located underneath the dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Power on the scan tool and allow it to boot up. Follow the on-screen instructions to input the Lumina's specific powertrain information.
Select "BCM" from the tool's main menu. Choose "Codes," then select "Clear all current and stored DTCs." DTC stands for "diagnostic trouble code." Allow the scan tool to clear the codes and reset the BCM.
Disconnect the scan tool from the diagnostic data port once the display indicates that the codes have been cleared and the BCM is reset. Start the engine and verify that the security light is no longer illuminated.

Insert the ignition key into any door or the trunk lid and unlock the door or trunk. You also can use the unlock button on the remote control to unlock any door or the trunk. This will silence the alarm.
Get in the car and insert the ignition key into the ignition, but do not start the car.
Remove the ignition key from the ignition.
Exit the car and lock the doors using either the ignition key or remote control.
Verify that the security indicator light on the dash illuminates. The security light will glow for about 30 seconds and then blink. The security system is now reset.

The Ion uses a passive alarm system that arm when you exit the vehicle and lock the doors with the keyless remote. If at any time the doors are opened without the use of the remote or the keys the alarm will sound. This is to prevent the theft of contents within the car.
The PASSKEY system uses an exciter coil located inside the key lock tumbler that detects the correct key being inserted and turned to start the car. When the correct key is turned in the cylinder it sends a signal to the computer which will then allow the fuel injectors to function. If the wrong key is used or if the system is tampered with, the car will not start.
Resetting the PASSKEY can be necessary at times if the programming in the module becomes corrupted or if a new key and key cylinder are installed. To reset the system, get in the car and shut the door. Turn the key on to the "Run" position without cranking the engine. Leave the key there for exactly 10 minutes. Turn the key to the off position without removing it and back to "Run" for 10 more minutes. Turn the key off again and back to "Run" for 10 minutes a third. Turn the key off and then attempt to start the engine. This is known as the "30-minute relearn."

Put the key into the ignition and turn it clockwise. The engine should start and the security light should come on.
Turn the ignition counterclockwise and turn it on again if the security light doesn't appear. It may have been damaged somehow if the light isn't displayed.
Insert the original key into the ignition and turn clockwise to turn on the engine. If you don't have the original, you will have to go to your GM service shop to obtain a new one.
Turn the key to "Off" and remove the key.
Insert the key that you want to program and turn it to "RUN" within five seconds of removing the original key. The security light will turn off to indicate that the key and security system has been reset.
