How to Change a Crankshaft Sensor in a 1995 Dodge 1500

The 1995 Dodge Ram came with a choice of several V6 and V8 engines. Despite this, the engine bay layout is very similar between engines, which makes the procedure to replace the crankshaft position sensor a straightforward process. If the crankshaft position sensor is faulty, your Dodge Ram 1500 may not run smoothly, particularly at idle. Replace it as soon as you can to keep your truck operating efficiently.

Step 1

Shut your engine off and let it cool off for about 20 minutes for safety. Round up your tools and get prepared for the crankshaft position sensor removal process.

Step 2

Remove the air hose attached to the air filter compartment in the center of the engine bay. Use your adjustable pliers to squeeze the clamp on the end of the hose and then pull the hose away to detach it. With the hose out of the way, you'll be able to reach the crankshaft position sensor underneath.

Step 3

Locate the crankshaft position sensor underneath the air hose. It's directly next to the EGR valve. The sensor has an electrical connection attached to it. It's about the size of a spark plug. You'll be able to see two bolts next to it.

Step 4

Push the tab on the electrical connection and pull it away to disconnect it. Remove the two crankshaft position sensor bolts with the appropriate-size socket wrench attachment. Pull the sensor off to remove it.

Step 5

Install the new sensor in its place and tighten the two bolts with your socket wrench. Plug the electrical connection into the crankshaft position sensor.
