How to Change the Headlight Switch on a Dodge Dakota
by Christian KillianReplacing the headlight switch in your Dodge Dakota requires the removal of the bezel or trim around the instrument cluster. The switch is located on the left side of the dash near the driver's door. Along with controlling the headlights, it also contains the dimmer for the instrument panel lights. The switch can fail and keep the lights from being turned on, but it could also leave you unable to shut them off which creates a problem by running the battery dead.
Step 1
Remove the bezel that surrounds the instrument panel by removing the retaining screws with a Phillips head screwdriver and then popping the bezel loose from the clips with a small flat head screwdriver or similar tool.
Step 2
Locate the headlight switch on the left side of the dash. You will see three retaining screws that are holding the switch into the dash. Remove the screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Step 3
Slide the switch forward until you can see the connectors for the wiring harness on the back of the switch. There are two connectors; remove them both and set them aside.
Step 4
Remove the switch from the dash and slide a new one into position. Plug the connectors into the back of the switch and be sure they lock into place. Install the retaining screws and tighten them with a Phillips head screwdriver.
Step 5
Reinstall the trim bezel around the cluster and tighten the retaining screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.
