How to Troubleshoot a 2004 Dodge Cummins Fan Clutch

Everyone enjoys the cool air from the air-conditioning unit on a warm summer day. Using your air conditioner, however, causes wear and tear on the fan clutch as well as other parts of the Cummins motor. The fan clutch is an electronically controlled part that attaches to the fan on the front of your motor, and causes air to be forced into the Cummins' A/C system. There are a few simple ways to test the fan clutch as make sure that it is functioning properly.

Open the hood of the vehicle. Put on your mechanics gloves.

Locate the fan clutch on the front of the motor. It is held on by six 1/2-inch bolts on Dodge trucks. Check the bolts to make sure that they are all fastened tightly. Use the ratchet and socket to tighten if necessary.

Check the electrical connection at the base of the fan clutch. Use both hands and pull the connectors apart. The connectors commonly corrode because of water and other environmental factors.

Check the electrical cables that run from the motor to the fan clutch. Another common problem with the new Cummins motor is that the electrical cable can be cut while the fan is engaged. If the cables are cut, splice them back together and secure them away from the fan.

Test the air conditioning to make sure the fan clutch will engage. Turn on the vehicle and then turn on the air conditioner. If the air conditioner is not blowing cold air, the fan clutch may have gone bad. Your local auto parts store will have several options for installing a new fan clutch on the 2004 Cummins motor.
