How to Reset the Security System in Oldsmobile Aleros
by Eric GrossoThe Passlock security system on the Oldsmobile Alero, made from 1999 to 2004, can be triggered by a number of actions that prohibit the vehicle from being started. Once the system is activated, fuel isn't delivered to the fuel rails, starving the engine until it stalls. The most common action triggering the system is a worn key or lock cylinder, which incorrectly signals the computer that a foreign object is being placed into the lock cylinder. However, resetting the Passlock security system can be done in a few minutes and requires no tools.
Step 1
Insert the key into the ignition.
Step 2
Rotate the key to the "On" position. Leave the key in that position for 10 minutes.
Step 3
Rotate the key to the "Off" position when the security warning light on the instrument panel disappears. This usually takes 10 to 12 minutes with key in the "On" position.
Step 4
Start the car as normal.
