How to Reset the Service Engine Soon Light on a Camaro
by Kyle SanstromThe service engine soon (SES) light on a Chevrolet Camaro is controlled by the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM is a small computer mounted inside the engine compartment responsible for controlling and monitoring all of the engine's electronic functions. When the PCM senses a problem with one or more of the engine's components, it illuminates the SES light and stores a trouble code in its internal flash memory.
Step 1
Shift the Camaro's transmission into park (automatic transmission) or first gear (manual transmission). Turn the engine off, and pull up the parking brake lever. Turn the ignition back to the "ON" position, but do not start the engine.
Step 2
Locate the Camaro's diagnostic data port. It is underneath the driver's side dashboard area, mounted just out of view on the inside of the lower dashboard trim panel.
Step 3
Connect the scan tool's data cable to the 16-pin diagnostic data port. Power on the scan tool, and allow it to boot up. Choose "PCM" from the scan tool's main menu.
Step 4
Select "Codes", then choose "Clear all current and stored DTCs". DTC stands for "diagnostic trouble code."
Step 5
Wait a moment for the scan tool to indicate the codes have been cleared. Unplug the scan tool, and start the engine. Verify the SES light is not illuminated.
