by Jody L. Campbell

Once you figure out the mystery of how the windshield wipers on your Pontiac Sunfire are fastened to the wiper arms, replacing them will become an easy task. Most often, you don't even bother to think of the windshield wipers until they're not clearing your windshield during inclement weather. Save yourself the labor charges and figure out how to replace them yourself.

How to Replace Windshield Wipers on a Pontiac Sunfire

Step 1

Lift the driver's side wiper arm as high as it will allow you to. While holding it with one hand, locate the locking tab with your other hand. It is on the underside of the center of the blade where it connects to the wiper arm.

Step 2

Press the tab upward and pull the wiper blade from the wiper arm. It may give some resistance depending on how long it's been on there, but it will come free.

Step 3

Tilt the windshield wiper horizontally to the wiper arm to remove it from the curved hook end of the wiper arm. Be careful not to let the wiper arm slip out of your hand and strike the windshield. You do not want to create an expensive repair while trying to accomplish a cheap one on your own.

Step 4

Stand the replacement windshield wiper horizontally against the top of the wiper arm and insert the curved hook end of the wiper arm into the front of the windshield wiper. Turn the windshield wiper vertically to match the position of the wiper arm until the curved hardware clip of the windshield wiper will slide into the curved hook of the wiper arm. Press the blade into the curved hook of the wiper arm until you hear or feel a slight click. Jiggle the windshield wiper arm back and forth and up and down to make sure it's locked securely into the wiper arm.

Step 5

Repeat this same procedure for the other side.
