How to Remove the Fuel Filter From a Ford Sport Trac

by Don Bowman

Replace your fuel filter at least every 30,000 miles to prevent any contaminants from getting through to the fuel injectors. The fuel filter on a Ford Sport Trac uses plastic spring clip fittings. For safety reasons, always replace the plastic spring clips when replacing the fuel pump. Also, make sure you install the fuel filter in the right direction; the arrow on the filter must point toward the front of the vehicle, as this is the direction of fuel flow.

Step 1

Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands. Remove the heat shield covering the fuel filter, which is in front of the fuel tank, using the ¼-inch ratchet and a socket.

Step 2

Remove the black shield over the fuel pump using the same ratchet and socket. Squeeze the white plastic spring clip all the way in, and pull the fuel line away from the filter. Do the same for the opposite side.

Step 3

Install new spring clips in either side of the hose, then insert the fuel filter nozzle into the hose and push it in until it clips. Give it a couple of tugs to make sure that it is locked in. Do the same for the other side.

Step 4

Replace the two shields in reverse order of removal.
