by Lina Schofield

You will need to remove the center console from your 2002 Ford Explorer before you can begin any repair work on the air conditioning unit or perform a radio installation. This task is not very time-consuming and doesn't require you to have any special skills or mechanical inclination. If you a few have basic tools, you can remove the console from your 2002 Explorer at home in less than an hour.

Step 1

Open the hood of your 2002 Explorer and use the support rod to prop the hood open for the duration of this project. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery by loosening the nut on the cable end with a wrench. Pull the cable free of the battery.

Step 2

Pry out the four retainer clips located at each corner of the console panel using the flat-head screwdriver.

Step 3

Remove both screws from the cup holder and slide the cup holder forward until it comes free from the console. Set it aside.

Step 4

Unscrew the four Phillips-head retainer screws from the console and slide the console forward.

Step 5

Unplug the electrical connectors for the air conditioning unit and the radio which are connected to the back of the console. Lift the console up and out of the car.
