How to Loosen the Tensioner Pulley in a Suzuki Grand Vitara
by Zyon SilketThe Suzuki Grand Vitara uses a single serpentine drive belt to run all of the engine's accessories, including the radiator fan. The belt uses the power from the crankshaft pulley, located in the lower front of the engine. As the belt ages, it stretches, and when it stretches too much you must loosen the tensioner pulley to tighten the belt or to replace the belt. The Vitara does not have an automatic belt tensioner built into the tensioner pulley. You must manually adjust the pulley, but before you can do that you must loosen it.
Step 1
Locate the Grand Vitara's tensioner pulley on the front of the engine block between the power steering pump and the crankshaft pulley. The tensioner has a hex-head bolt going through the center of it, and it does not have any accessories attached to it.
Step 2
Place a socket and ratchet onto the bolt that goes through the center of the pulley.
Step 3
Rotate the ratchet counterclockwise to loosen the bolt approximately two rotations. This gives you the ability to raise or lower the pulley on the engine block.
