How to Replace the Windshield Washer Reservoir in a Saturn VUE. The Saturn VUE was the top selling SUV until the summer of 2008. No matter what year your VUE is, you want to maintain it and have it looking new. One way to do this is to make sure your windshield is always sparkling. Using the windshield washer fluid helps you do this, so make sure you fill it regularly. Check for leaks, if you find there isn't any fluid.
Learn the part number of your windshield washer reservoir--which depends on the year of your Saturn VUE. Getting to the reservoir in your SUV can be time consuming; therefore, it's best to have the new reservoir before you begin. Some dealerships have parts available for purchase and may have a replacement reservoir in stock, otherwise, ask them to order one for you. Alternatively, you can order the part from an online source or check the salvage yards.
Work on your Saturn VUE in your driveway, if it's relatively flat. Back in, so you have easy access to the hood. Put your SUV in park, turn it off, remove the keys, put on the emergency brake and locate the hood release, which is on the left side of the steering wheel under the instrument panel.
Release the auxiliary latch located under the hood, in the center, to open your hood fully. Raise it until the hydraulic lifts kicks in and holds it up for you.
Look in the engine compartment and locate the windshield washer reservoir. The reservoir in the newer Saturn VUE is located in the front of the compartment. However, if your VUE is an older model--before 2008--then you'll find the reservoir in the back right corner.
Find the negative cable connected to the battery and disconnect it. Check if your Saturn VUE has air bags. If it does, wait at least a minute and a half before doing any work.
Detach the hose and connector from the washer pump. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the two lower screws and the upper screw that attach the reservoir to your SUV. Then, lift out the reservoir and toss the seals in the trash. You should always replace the seals and not reuse the old ones.
Locate the air induction assembly and the two retainers on the reservoir and undo them. Next, remove the washer pump by pulling it out of the reservoir.
Install the new windshield washer reservoir, by first pushing the pump into it. Then, put the two retainers and the air induction assembly back where they belong. Next, put the reservoir assembly in your Saturn VUE, redo the screws, replace the seals and connect the electrical lead and the hose.
Reconnect the negative battery cable. Fill the new reservoir with fluid and test it to make sure you put everything back exactly as you found it and everything is working properly.
Check for a repairable crack in your Saturn VUE's reservoir by pouring some fluid in to find the leak. You may be able to repair the reservoir, rather than replace it, if the crack is small enough. Before you remove the reservoir, set a pan under your car to catch any fluid that may still be in it. Running the washer pump without fluid can damage it and replacing the pump can be harder than replacing the reservoir. Therefore, always keep your windshield washer reservoir filled.
Avoid frozen fluid in your windshield washer reservoir and your washer lines by using weather appropriate fluid in the wintertime that includes both cleaner and ice remover.
