What Is a CV Axle?

Constant velocity (CV) axles and joints help to provide the forward momentum for movement and turning of a vehicle. CV joints and axles help to provide suspension and flexibility for moving cars.

Significance

A CV axle provides the flexibility for a vehicle to move along an uneven road surface. It also allows for the drive shaft to change its length slightly as the car moves along varying dimensions on the road.

CV Axle Assemblies

CV axles are usually manufactured with the boots preinstalled, lubricated and set to the appropriate length for your vehicle. Once you have removed the wheel hub and have access to the CV axle, you can simply pop out the old CV axle and install a new one.

Signs of Failure

Signs of failure for CV joints and axles including a metallic, clicking noise that is heard whenever the vehicle is turning or accelerating. This usually indicates that dirt and grime have gotten inside the CV joint bearings, which have leaked the lubrication fluid used in the joint. It is important to regularly check the CV boots for signs of decay and wear.
