How to Check the Transmission Fluid in a Chevy Malibu
by Johnathan CronkIt's important to check the transmission fluid in your Chevrolet Malibu any time you check your motor oil or perform maintenance on the vehicle. The transmission fluid is essential to the life of your transmission as it's responsible for lubricating the gears and components, keeping the transmission running smoothly and efficiently.
Step 1
Drive the Malibu for 10 minutes then place it in park on level ground. It's important to drive the vehicle first in order to check the transmission fluid while at operating temperature. This will ensure the most accurate reading.
Step 2
Pop open the hood of the Malibu using the hood release lever located on the driver's side of the vehicle, under the steering wheel. Locate the automatic transmission fluid dipstick, labeled "ATF." On the Malibu you will find the ATF on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Step 3
Pull the dipstick out of the container and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick completely then remove it again. Read the measurement on the dipstick. The fluid should be between the "Full" and "Add" marks. If the fluid is below or at the "Add" marking, add fluid immediately to avoid damage to your vehicle.
