When your S10 truck begins running rough or skipping during idle, replacing the spark plugs may eliminate the skip. Chevrolet recommends that you change the spark plugs in your truck at least every 30,000 miles. Buy replacement spark plugs from an auto parts retailer. Request pre-gapped plugs to avoid the need to gap the plugs before installation. The S10 is equipped with a four-cylinder or six-cylinder engine. Despite the difference in cylinders, the replacement process is the same.

Step 1

Raise the hood of your S10 and support it with the prop rod. Locate the spark plug wires protruding from the spark plugs. There will be four or six spark plugs, depending on the engine in your truck.

Step 2

Choose a plug to start with, making note of your starting point and the direction you want to work in. Grab the rubber boot on top of the plug. Twist the boot slightly while you pull up to remove it from the spark plug.

Step 3

Remove the plug from the S10’s engine with a spark plug socket and ratchet. Insert the new spark plug, threading it by hand to avoid cross threading it. Tighten it with the socket and ratchet.

Step 4

Insert dielectric grease in the boot of the plug wire. A dime-sized amount of grease will suffice. Push the boot onto the plug, twisting until it clicks in place.

Step 5

Repeat the process for each of the remaining plugs, one at a time. Removing more than one plug and wire at a time can cause you to confuse the plug wires, which can cause your S10’s engine to run poorly. Close the hood before starting the engine.
