How to Find the Build Date of an Audi
by Chester RockwellDetermining your Audi's build date is a quick and easy procedure that can be done by decoding the car's vehicle identification number, also known as the VIN, and by checking the car's specification sheet. Every car manufacturer assigns a unique VIN to each car it produces, as it is a required standard in auto manufacturing industry processes. The VIN contains information such as country of origin, color, manufacturer and the car's build date. The specification sheet is a sticker placed by the manufacturer in one of the car's door jams.
Obtaining Build Year from VIN
Step 1
Obtain the vehicle's VIN from the dashboard, a body panel, or the Audi's engine bay. Newer Audis have a display window for the VIN at the lower driver's side corner of the windshield.
Step 2
Count out to the 10th character in the VIN and note its value.
Step 3
The 10th character identifies the model year by providing a letter, or number. For example, 1997 is represented by the letter "V", 1998 is represented by "W", 1999 is represented by "X", 2000 by "Y", 2001 is "1", 2002 is "2", and so on.
Obtaining Build Date from Specifications Sheet
Step 1
Locate the specifications sheet for your Audi in one of the door jams. If your car is a coupe, it is most likely located in the driver's side door jam. If it's a sedan, check the rear door jams.
Step 2
Locate the "Build Date" field on the specifications sheet
Step 3
Note the month and year printed on the specifications sheet in the "Build Date" field.
