How to Find a Title for a Car With VIN
by Tiffany RaifordWith the vehicle identification number, or VIN, of a vehicle, anyone has the power to locate the title of that specific vehicle. Vehicle title searches are commonly done using the VIN. Potential purchasers of a car can get a complete title history of the vehicle before they make their final decision to purchase a vehicle. Titles reveal the complete history of vehicles, including the number of owners, accidents and repairs the vehicle has had over the course of its life.
Step 1
Visit the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System website. This site is a subsidiary of the U.S. Department of Justice, which partners with search companies that perform online title searches for anyone with a vehicle identification number.
Step 2
Click on the "Check Vehicle History" link. Choose one of the three approved providers. Each provider's search process works the same way.
Step 3
Enter the VIN of the vehicle to do a title search. Provide your credit card and personal information before reviewing and submitting your search. The vehicle's title is brought up for you to view.
