Power windows use regulators to help raise and lower the window within the door. With age, the window regulators that hold your window in place can fail, causing your window to fall down into the door of the vehicle. You must then remove the door's interior trim to gain access to the window and repair or replace the regulator.

Step 1

Open the hood and disconnect the negative terminal cable from the battery. Doing so will prevent the possibility of shock and serious injury from occurring.

Step 2

Open the affected door of the vehicle and remove the interior trim and weatherstripping. You may need a slotted screwdriver and a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the various clips and screws holding the trim in place.

Step 3

Remove any sound-deadening or weather-sealing plastic from the door frame. Remove the window glass pane from the door. Work the glass upward through the door and then use a length of wood to prop the glass in place.

Step 4

Reattach the window to the regulator if the window glass pane was worked loose. If the regulator itself is broken, remove the clips or bolts holding the regulator to the window and the window motor. Remove the window glass pane first, and then remove the regulator, using a ratchet and socket to remove the bolts holding the regulator to the door frame. Slide the new regulator into position and reattach it to both the glass and the window motor.

Step 5

Connect the negative terminal cable to the battery. Turn the vehicle's ignition cylinder to the "On" position and observe the action of the window. Turn the ignition cylinder back to the "Off" position and disconnect the battery once more when finished.

Step 6

Reattach the interior trim and weatherstripping to the door panel. Reconnect the negative terminal cable to the battery and close the hood.
