How to Reset the Air Bag on a 2005 Chevy Silverado
by Kyle SanstromThe air bag system on a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado is controlled by a stand-alone air bag computer. This computer continuously monitors the air bag system's functioning state and will illuminate the air bag warning light if it detects a problem. When the air bag warning light is illuminated, the air bag system is disabled. This warning light cannot be turned off by unplugging any of the air bag electrical connectors or disconnecting the vehicle's battery. It must be turned off using an automotive scan tool connected to the Silverado's data port.
Step 1
Place the Silverado's transmission in park (or first gear if it's a manual) and shut down the engine. Apply the parking brake.
Step 2
Plug the scan tool's communication cable into the truck's diagnostic data port located underneath the dashboard, to the left of the cup holders.
Step 3
Turn on the scan tool and select "Air Bag" from the main menu. Select the "codes" menu, then select "clear all codes." Unplug the scan tool from the vehicle.
Step 4
Start up the engine and check to make sure that the air bag light is no longer on. The air bag system is now reset.
