In the era prior to the 1980s, a carburetor situated on an intake manifold was primarily employed to manage air and fuel intake in engines. However, due to advancements in technology and increasingly stringent emissions standards, the more efficient fuel injection systems came to be widely adopted. The throttle body, governed by an electronic control unit (ECU), became a crucial part of this system, controlling the air and fuel entering the vehicle's engine.
Airflow and Throttle Body Mechanics
The throttle body, an integral component of the air intake system, manages the airflow into the engine. It incorporates a butterfly valve, also known as a throttle valve, which modifies the air intake based on the driver's input through the accelerator pedal, also known as the gas pedal. When the pedal is depressed, the valve opens, augmenting the amount of air entering the engine. On the contrary, releasing the pedal closes the valve, thereby lessening the amount of air intake.
Air Direction and Fuel Mixture
Air that has been filtered through an air filter enters the throttle body and is channeled into the intake manifold. The manifold integrates this air with fuel, producing a fuel mixture that is subsequently distributed to each of the engine cylinders for combustion.
Volume Reading and Throttle Position
Within the throttle body, electrical components like the throttle position sensor (TPS) track and communicate the volume of air entering the engine to the vehicle's control unit. This coordination ensures the precise amount of fuel is added to achieve an optimal fuel-to-air ratio for efficient combustion in the combustion chamber. The TPS also monitors the throttle valve's position and rate of opening, permitting the control unit to adjust the fuel supply, enhancing throttle response and acceleration.
In some throttle body designs, fuel injectors are directly installed within the unit. As the butterfly valve opens, the injector sprays fuel into the inflowing air, creating a fuel mixture. This mixture is then guided into the intake runners and eventually reaches the engine cylinders for combustion.
Over time, grime and build-up on the throttle plate can lead to issues such as a rough idle or stalling, necessitating a DIY cleanup. A dirty throttle body might also activate the check engine light on the dashboard. In modern vehicles, the traditional throttle cable has often been replaced with electronic throttle control or a drive-by-wire system.
