How to Get a Kansas Title With Only a Bill of Sale

by Jamie Lisse

In the state of Kansas, an antique vehicle is the only vehicle type that can be titled with just a bill of sale. To qualify as an antique vehicle, your automobile is required to be more than 35 years old and without any major alterations so that it is as close to its original form as possible. For vehicles that do not qualify as an antique, there is a way to get a title with a bill of sale that requires getting the original title reissued.

Antique Vehicles

Step 1

Bring the bill of sale to your local county treasurer's motor vehicle office if the antique vehicle is model year 1949 or earlier. Nothing else is required to title it. As of May 2010, the title fee is $10.

Step 2

Take your antique car to a local Kansas Highway Patrol office to get a VIN inspection done if the vehicle is model year 1950 or later. The Kansas Highway Patrol website has a list of locations. As of May 2010, the fee is $10 for VIN inspection.

Step 3

Gather the VIN inspection report and the bill of sale and take them to your local county treasurer's motor vehicle office to get titled if the vehicle is model year 1950 or later. As of May 2010, the title fee is $10.

Regular Vehicles

Step 1

Download form TR-720B from the Kansas Department of Revenue website. It is the application for a reissue title. Take the form to the person that sold you the car and have them fill it out and sign it.

Step 2

Take the completed form with the person that sold you the car to the local county treasurer's motor vehicle office. Submit the form with the filing fee, which is $10 as of May 2010.

Step 3

Ask the person that sold the car to you to sign over the reissued title to you. Once this is done, you can submit it with your bill of sale to get a Kansas title.
