How to Replace the Dashboard in a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse

by Daniel Valladares

Replacing the dashboard is a very long and difficult process. In fact, short of rebuilding the engine, it is one of the most lengthy tasks you can perform on your 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse. Thankfully, it is not very difficult. Removing the dashboard requires you to remove all of the components on top of the dashboard, and then remove a few screws and bolts to actually pull the dashboard off. You can expect to take anywhere from two to four hours replacing the dashboard in your 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse.

Step 1

Open the Eclipse's hood and use a socket wrench to unplug the negative battery cable.

Step 2

Use a slotted screwdriver to pry out the trim panel around the stereo. Pry out the top section of the center console and disconnect the electrical connection from the lighter.

Step 3

Remove the four screws securing the center console dash and pull the dash out of the vehicle.

Step 4

Use a slotted screwdriver to pry out the two side panels of the dashboard. Remove the lower dash panel on the driver's side by removing the two bolts securing it to the vehicle with a socket wrench. Use a slotted screwdriver to pry out the hood releasing lever. Remove the lower dash panel on the passenger's side by removing the two bolts securing it to the vehicle. Remove it from the Eclipse.

Step 5

Open the glove compartment and squeeze the tabs on the side to release it from the dash. Pull it out of the vehicle. Pop out the panel below the steering wheel and remove the three screws below the panel with a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 6

Remove all of the air vents with a slotted screwdriver. Remove the passenger's side air bag by removing the air bag cover. There are two bolts and four screws securing the air bag cover. Once those are removed, you can easily pull the air bag out.

Step 7

Remove the four bolts and two screws securing the dashboard to the Eclipse. There are two bolts on each side of the dashboard and two screws underneath the defroster grille. Once you have removed those, pull the dashboard up and out of the Eclipse. Install a replacement dashboard by putting it into the vehicle and reinstalling the four bolts and two screws. Reattach all other components in the reverse order of their removal. Don't forget to reconnect the battery.
