How to Change the Belt for Cars

In Hyundai car added a hatchback to the base model of the Hyundai car. It was well known for its fuel economy and its ease of handling. The Hyundai car utilized a central drive belt to power the alternator, fan and water pump, as well as a handful of other engine parts. The belt on an Hyundai car is crucial to its operation, and rough driving as well as overheating can lead to belt damage. If the belt goes out on the Hyundai car it will cease to operate. The changing of the belt usually takes less than an hour.

Pop the hood and locate the auto tensioner on the center of the engine, which has a bolt on the top that allows you to mount a ratchet.

Note the sticker under the hood that shows the correct routing of the belt.

Place the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket on the tensioner and turn it to the left, which will release tension on the belt and allow you to slide it off the alternator and other accessories with your hand, so you can remove the belt entirely.

Position the replacement belt onto the accessories per the sticker under the hood. (You won't be able to do this to all accessories, but you can start the process.) Pull the tensioner to the left again using the 1/2-inch ratchet and socket, then route the belt the rest of the way around the accessories.

Release the tensioner using the ratchet and allow it to contact the drive belt. Examine all the points where the belt contacts an accessory, and make sure the belt is sitting squarely.

 How to Replace the Belts for a 2005 Hyundai Elantra

Locate the tension pulley in the engine. The tension pulley is located directly behind the fan. It is 4 to 9 inches across.

Place the tension tool on the pulley and use it to remove the tension from the belt by applying pressure to the pulley, letting the tool act as a lever.

Make sure to draw a diagram of the pathway of the belt if there is no such diagram already on the front of the engine, then remove the belt. With the slack created from the pulley, it will easily slip off.

Loosen the adjuster bolt on the tension pulley bracket. Use the socket wrench and loosen the bolt until the pulley can move side to side.

Set the new belt onto the components and the pulley. Make sure to follow the diagram exactly.

Tighten the belt by placing the tension tool on the pulley and using the leverage to tighten the belt. With the belt held tight, tighten the adjuster bolt on the bracket. Release the tension pulley.

 How to Change the Belt on a 1998 Mazda 626

Park the 1998 Mazda 626 on a level surface and shut the engine off. Set the parking brake and open the hood. Wait for the engine to cool down before working inside the engine compartment.

Locate the alternator belt adjustment bracket on the left-hand side of the alternator. The adjustment bracket is made up of a pulley, an adjustment bracket and an adjustment bolt sticking out of the top of the bracket. Loosen the bolt in the center of the adjustment pulley with the ratchet and a socket.

Turn the adjustment bolt counterclockwise until the belt is loose. Pull the belt out from under the adjustment pulley. Pull the belt off the alternator pulley, the air conditioner compressor pulley and the crankshaft pulley, then remove the belt from the engine compartment.

Slide under the front of the engine and locate the power steering pump belt adjustment bracket on the left side of the crankshaft pulley. The power steering belt adjustment bracket is also made up of a pulley, an adjustment bracket and an adjustable bolt sticking out of the bottom of the bracket.

Loosen the bolt in the center of the adjustment pulley with the ratchet and socket. Turn the adjustment bolt counterclockwise with the ratchet and socket until the belt is loose. Pull the belt off the adjustment pulley, the crankshaft pulley, the power steering pump pulley and the water pump pulley. Pull the belt out of the engine compartment.

Wrap the new alternator belt around the crankshaft pulley, air conditioner compressor pulley, alternator pulley and adjustment bracket pulley. Tighten the belt by turning the adjustment bolt clockwise with the ratchet and socket until the belt is tight. Once the belt is tight, check the tension by pushing inward on the belt with your hand until the belt has no more than a half-inch of deflection at its longest span. Adjust the belt as needed to get a half-inch of deflection in the belt. Retighten the bolt in the center of the adjustment pulley with the ratchet and socket.

Move back to the bottom of the engine and wrap the new power steering pump belt around the crankshaft pulley, water pump pulley, power steering pump pulley and adjustment pulley. Tighten the belt by turning the adjustment bolt clockwise with the ratchet and socket until the belt is tight. Once the belt is tight, check the tension by pushing inward on the belt with your hand until the belt has no more than a half-inch of deflection at its longest span. Adjust the belt as needed to get a half-inch of deflection in the belt. Retighten the bolt in the center of the adjustment pulley with the ratchet and socket.

Inspect both belts to ensure that they are properly seated inside each pulley. Crank the engine and let it run for about 30 seconds. Inspect the belts with the engine running to ensure that they remain seated with the engine running. Turn the engine off and recheck the belts' tension. Adjust as needed. Close the hood.
