How to Find the Chassis Number on a Mercedes
by Vanessa PadgalskasAll Mercedes vehicles made since 1959 have 12-digit chassis numbers. The first three numbers tell you the body style; the second three numbers indicate the vehicle model; the next two numbers show where the Mercedes was manufactured, what type of transmission it has and if it is driven on the right or left side; and the last six numbers are the vehicle's serial number. You need to know the chassis number if you are ordering a part for your Mercedes.
Step 1
Pop the hood by pulling the lever located between the driver's side door and the steering wheel.
Step 2
Open the hood and look for the radiator at the front of the engine compartment.
Step 3
Look for a metal data plate on top of the radiator. The data plate lists the chassis number and the engine number. The chassis number will be labeled either by the word "Chassis" or "Fahrgestall Nr."
You can also find the chassis number by looking at the Data Card, which came with the vehicle's original manuals.
