How to Replace Forester Fog Light

by Dustin Thornton

Some Subaru Forester models come equipped with fog lights. Fog lights improve sub-par driving conditions by shining a low yellow light directly on the road, reducing glare and improving visibility. The fog lights on your Forester require a bit more effort to replace than the normal external lights; however, you can replace them yourself with a few tools. Always replace automotive lights with bulbs designed to fit your specific vehicle.

Step 1

Turn on your fog lights and determine which fog light bulb needs replacement. Switch the fog lights off. Switch the Subaru Forester engine off.

Step 2

Grab the lower lip of the fog light protector cover and peel it downward to unhook it from the fog light assembly. Pull the fog light protector cover off.

Step 3

Remove the two Phillips screws securing the fog light assembly to the bumper. These are located on the lower portion of the fog light assembly on the outside of the bumper.

Step 4

Reach behind the bumper and locate the wiring harness that connects to the fog light bulb. Depress the retaining clip and disconnect the wiring harness from the bulb.

Step 5

Pull the fog light assembly forward to remove it from the bumper.

Step 6

Remove the bulb from the fog light assembly by turning it counterclockwise and pulling it directly out.

Step 7

Replace the bulb with an identical bulb. Insert the bulb into the fog light assembly, making sure that the grooves on the bulb line up with the grooves on the fog light assembly. Twist the bulb clockwise to secure it.

Step 8

Insert the fog light assembly back into the bumper. Reach behind the bumper and reconnect the wiring harness to the bulb in the fog light assembly.

Step 9

Replace the two Phillips screws in the fog light assembly to secure it to the bumper.

Step 10

Insert the top of the fog light protector cover over the top of the fog light assembly. Clip the bottom of the protector cover over the bottom of the assembly.

Step 11

Repeat the process on the other fog light, if necessary. Test the fog lights to verify they work.
