How to Calculate Truck Shipping

Various types of cargo can be shipped on land by truck, and there are many shipping companies that use trucks to transport cargo from one place to another. Shipping companies that are transporting freight by truck have specific shipping costs, depending on several factors, such as the weight and amount of cargo that is being shipped. You can calculate truck shipping by using an online freight calculator such as the one available from FreightCenter.

Go to the FreightCenter website (see Resources section) and click the buttons on the middle of the page to obtain a free cost estimate.

Select the "Shipment Type" at the top of the form. You can choose a "Full Truckload" or a "Less-than-Truckload" (LTL).

Enter the ZIP code in the "Ship From Location" section and then select the "Location Type" from the drop-down menu. Click on the down arrow on the drop-down to see a list and then click the appropriate option.

Enter the ZIP code in the "Ship To Location" section and then select the "Location Type" from the drop-down menu. Click on the down arrow on the drop-down to see a list and then click the appropriate option.

Complete the "Items to be Shipped" section. Enter the packing type by selecting the option from the drop-down menu. Enter the total number of boxes in the "Quantity" field and the total weight of all boxes in the "Total Weight" field. You then need to enter the dimensions of all the boxes in the "Total Dimensions" field and select the measurement type from the drop-down menu.

Select the proper freight class.

Select the "Freight Class" by choosing an option from the drop-down menu. Click the "Lookup" link and enter information in the form to calculate the "Freight Class." Alternatively, you can call the toll-free number that is listed on the screen.

Determine what extra services you want.

Determine if you want any extra services, such as insurance or hazmat (hazardous material handling), by clicking the appropriate box.

Click "Get Quotes" to see a list of carriers and shipping rates.

  • check Enter an additional item by clicking the "Add Another Item" button.
  • check You can have your complete quote emailed to you by registering on the site.

  • close You will pay a minimum of $45 per shipment for insurance, regardless of the weight of the freight or cargo.
