How to Adjust an MR2 Clutch Pedal for Free Play

The MR2 is a two seat sports car produced by Toyota since 1985 although between the years of 1996 and 1999 the MR2 was not available in the United States. The MR2 shares many mechanical parts with other Toyotas, making the little sporty car very economical and easy to work on. Many MR2s come with manual transmission and require maintenance on the clutch. If the manual transmission in your MR2 becomes hard to shift, you may need to adjust the clutch pedal free play.

Adjust the clutch pedal height before adjusting free play. Remove the floor mat and using a ruler measure from the top of the clutch pedal to the floor (the measurement should be 7.2 to 7.6 inches).

Loosen the lock nut near the pivot point at the front of the clutch pedal with an adjustable wrench in a counterclockwise direction if the clutch pedal height needs adjustment. Turn the stopper bolt with an adjustable wrench in the direction needed to obtain the proper clutch pedal height. Tighten the lock nut with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction.

Push on the clutch pedal with your hand until clutch resistance is felt while you measure with a ruler (this is the clutch pedal free play, and the measurement should be .2 to .6 inches). Push further on the clutch pedal softly with your finger until the resistance increases (this is push rod play, and the measurement should be .04 to .2 inches).

Loosen the lock nut near the pivot point at the rear of the clutch pedal with an adjustable wrench in a counterclockwise direction if the free play or push rod needs adjustment. Turn the push rod by hand in the direction needed to obtain the correct clutch pedal free play and push rod free play measurements. Tighten the lock nut with an adjustable wrench in a clockwise direction.

Measure the pedal height again and make readjustments if needed. Replace the floor mat and road test the car.

Tip

  • check If adjusting the clutch pedal does not correct a hard shifting problem, there may be a problem with the clutch master cylinder or with the clutch itself.
